On Silver Tides is the kind of novel that leaves you wanting more. It follows the journey of Kelda and the great lengths she goes to in order to protect her little sister, Isla. Kelda and her family are freshwater merpeople but little Isla is born different. The family protects Isla from the suspicions of the community but when they are betrayed the sisters escape. They join forces with a mysterious boy and embark on a journey that will change their lives forever.

This book was pure escapism for me. The author’s ability to completely consume you into the story was admirable. It felt as if I was right there with the characters. The world-building is well thought out and Bishop’s unique style of writing really adds to the essence of the storytelling. We also get a map at the beginning of the book, which is a nice touch. I found it interesting to read the ‘extracts’ that were placed between chapters, a unique and effective idea, which again contributed to my feeling of truly being immersed in the story. The pacing of the plot was steady, with an underlying message, mentioning our own relationship with the environment. I think this book would appeal to a lot of readers. It has something for everyone – a thrilling adventure, romance, a coming-of-age story and, of course, lovable characters. I can guarantee you that this book will transport you into a captivating and enchanting world of adventure!
