OveremotionaI by David Fenne is a majestically woven tale of finding yourself, queer identity, growing up, and coming to terms with your magic emotional superpowers that can make sinkholes appear out of nowhere. Steven’s emotions create a supernatural effect on the world around him (like when he kissed a guy and his head exploded) and, becoming overwhelmed by his powers and fearing for those around him, Steven flees to the dingy town of Grusby-on-Sea in an attempt to stifle them. But trouble seems to follow Steven wherever he goes.

I really loved this book. It was perfectly written. The pacing made the story never feel boring, but also not too quick or overwhelming. All of the characters were funny and genuine and I really related to a lot of them. The book had a lot of comedy and even very dramatic moments had lighter bits which were really fun. Overall the book was really dramatic and action-packed but still had plenty of room for emotional character growth and it was really satisfying to see all of the pieces of the plot come together by the end. The book also has amazing LGBT representation and shows a character finding their identity, coming to terms with it, and becoming proud of who they are. Steven’s superpowers and his journey with them was relatable both to queer experiences, but also disabled ones, which felt really nice. Overall the book was really good and I would recommend it to anyone who likes urban fantasy, action, supernatural mysteries, and rereading books.
