We are immediately plunged into the entrancing world of protagonist Kurara and her shipmates. Rebel Fire is the perfect novel for fans of Japanese mythology, filled with rich, vivid imagery and engaging descriptions. This adventurous thriller is set in a dystopian world of incredible flying cities and enthralling battles.

I thoroughly enjoyed the lyrical writing throughout this novel. I was completely engrossed by the gorgeous descriptions and fast-paced plot. Lin manages to create quite an immersive atmosphere through the course of the fantasy novel. I was also kept engaged by the rich characters, and the completely unpredictable but lovable protagonist! Kurara was an intricate, relatable and original character.

Although I had not read the first book in this series, Rebel Skies, I still loved reading the novel, as it was clear and easy to follow. My only complaint was that some terminology may have been difficult to understand at times, but this may also come down to personal preference. This may have been easier had I read the first part of the series.

I would recommend this magical fantasy novel to teenagers as some themes may be more complex for younger audiences, such as morality, imperialism and slavery. A novel I would definitely recommend to a friend.

A beautifully written piece.
