Northranger is a graphic novel set in the twenty-first century. The story follows a young boy named Cade who is sent to work on a ranch for the summer. The ranch is owned by his stepdad’s friend from the military, General Tyler. The summer starts and Cade has to endure long hours of ranch labour with General Tyler’s son Henry and daughter Henri. Henry and Cade bond over their love of horror movies and their friendship blossoms into something more.

Northranger by Rey Terciero, Illustrated by Bre Indigo  Book cover

When Henry and Cade’s family spend the weekend at Northranger, a creepy house that Henry’s dead mum left him, secrets start to resurface and Henry seems eager to keep them hidden.

The main character Cade is an introspective character who has an obsession with horror movies. Problems he faces throughout the book include his relationship with stepdad, his fear of horses and his first love. The pictures delineate the story nicely and even though I’m not the biggest fan of graphic novels, it was an easy read, perfect to just pick up before bed and read a few pages. This book is perfect for fans of Heartstopper, and anyone who enjoys a mystery with a compelling plot and an ending you would never guess.
